How To Structure a Blog Post for SEO
I just posted a new post on Profitable Hobbies Blog. It is titled Engraving Glass Calligraphy.
In the post, I tell about Ken Brown and how he has combined his calligraphy skill with a high speed drill to produce amazing calligraphy engraving on glass.
Within just a few minutes, the post ranked on the first page in google for many different phrases including engraving glass calligraphy, glass calligraphy, glass calligraphy engraving – just to name a few.
Here are the basics for ranking a post quickly in google – based on my experience.
First – no one can argue the power of wordpress. I must give credit to a great platform, with awesome SEO built right in. I am not talking about the free version, but rather the .org, installed on your own server with the permalink structure set correctly for SEO practices.
Title your post for a term you want to rank for in the search engines.
Put an H1 tag at the top of the post, reflecting the title, or other key words relating to the post.
Use the keywords (again) in the first paragraph – or related keyword phrases – remember that you are not selling to the search engines and your post needs to still read well to your site visitors. They are the ones that will make the big decision – whether to buy from you or not. Structuring a blog post correctly is an act of balancing content for search engines and site visitors.
Use keywords and keyword phrases throughout the post.
Put your keywords in the tags. I do not like to use an auto tagger – I like to manually enter the tags. I do not put more tags than I need, I only put the relevant keywords from the post in the tags.
Try it and let me know how it works for you.
One question that I am asked often is, “Why would I need a blog that I have to pay for, when I can get a blog free on the internet?”
Where do I start to list the limitations of Free Blogs?
- Have you looked at the free blogging platforms? They let you choose from some samples, but they are very limited in what you can actually do. A professional blog is fully customizable.
- Custom Permalinks – you need to control the way permalinks are structured on your blog to make sure search engines index all of your posts and return to your site often. Free platforms such as blogspot do not offer this level of customization.
- You are attracting visitors to THEIR site. They let you blog on their site so your content will attract customers that they can then advertise to. You will notice many advertisements on most free blogging platforms.
- You don’t own the content – it could be gone tomorrow and all your hard work will be lost.
- Your blog is buried within millions of others – just another blog
- Lame url such as www.yourname.blogspot.com – How are your customers going to remember that?
- No support
